Our Church

St. Michael’s is an inclusive Episcopal parish where everyone is welcome. We hope to offer acceptance, healing, and spiritual growth to all who call St. Michael’s their spiritual home and all who visit in person or online.

Church office hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 AM to 1 PM.

At St. Michael’s, we are committed to providing a physically and emotionally safe environment for all people, paying special attention to vulnerable children and adults. We have adopted the Diocesan Policy for the Protection of Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Adults, which you can find by clicking this link: http://images.acswebnetworks.com/1/2279/SafeChurchDiocesanPolicy2019_01REV2020.pdf

The Episcopal Church

The Episcopal Church welcomes all who worship Jesus Christ, in 111 dioceses and regional areas in 17 nations. The Episcopal Church is a member province of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

The mission of the church, as stated in the Book of Common Prayer’s catechism (p. 855), is "to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ."

We Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As constituent members of the Anglican Communion in the United States, we are descendants of and partners with the Church of England and the Scottish Episcopal Church, and are part of the third largest group of Christians in the world.

We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world.

We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; women and men serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our church. Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our church. Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation.

We believe that God loves you – no exceptions.

St. Michael’s is a parish in the Diocese of Southern Virginia, which was formed in 1892, and has over 30,000 members and 102 congregations. A diverse Eucharistic community, committed to the Gospel, collaborating for strength, innovating for growth, equipping each other to live in the world as disciples of Jesus Christ, our Diocese stretches from the Atlantic Ocean westward to Dan River, and from the south side of the James River at Richmond to the North Carolina border.

Our History

In March 1958, the Rev. Sidney C. Swann, the Rector of St. Paul’s, Petersburg, and members of his vestry met with a group of interested persons to discuss the establishment of an Episcopal mission in Colonial Heights. As an outcome of the meeting an advisory committee was formed and began to function in May. A month later word was received that St. Michael’s had been officially recognized as a parochial mission of St. Paul’s. On May 4, 1959, St. Michael’s was recognized as an organized mission by the 67th Annual Council of the Diocese of Southern Virginia meeting at Virginia Beach. It became an independent parish at the 68th Annual Council meeting in Petersburg on May 2, 1960.

Ground was broken on the present site of the church on September 21, 1958, and the service of dedication, opening the present building, was conducted on June 28, 1959. The Rt. Rev. David S. Rose, Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, officiated at both ceremonies.
